When it comes to music, there is no one better than Ross King. I came across Ross' music when I was a freshman in college. A friend popped in the CD on the way back from church and told me to listen to the song, Meet Me Where I Am. That song really spoke to me during a difficult time in my life and I haven't stopped listening to his music since that point. Not only do I enjoy the sound of his music, but the thing I tell people is that he is "the intelligent man's music". Ross is not afraid to say things exactly how he sees them or feels about them. He says things that most of us think, but either don't have the platform or the guts to say them. Don't get me wrong here...I enjoy many artists within the Christian music industry. However, I think most of us could agree that what they can say is controlled somewhat by the industry big-wigs. Not to mention the fact that many artists try too hard to get so "mature" artistically that they turn the obvious into the trivial. They try to sound so sophisticated and "cutting edge" that the message gets lost somewhere. Now, is it just me or does the message found in many of their songs border on spiritual milk? I think too many times in Christianity we are satisfied with surface Christianity that we never delve deep into the deeper issues. I guess the record industry realizes this and that's why we get bombarded with music that touches on our feelings. As Dr. Ergun Caner says (another refreshingly honest man), we have this "bumper sticker theology" where the books in the front of Christian bookstores are things like, "Stick a geranium in your hat and smile about it!", right next to the footprints toilet paper and WWJD bracelets. Now, don't get me wrong here, all of those things are well and good. I like reading those books (well, maybe not the geranium one!) and I like a lot of Christian music, but if that is all we feed on then I'm afraid our souls begin to starve and are tossed back and forth by the winds of culture. It's those times we need an Anchor!
Here is where Ross King's music breathes life into the searching and hungry soul. Sure, Ross is an artist and the way he writes his music is incredibly profound. I find myself learning new things after having listened to a song about 50 times. He has the amazing gift of stating things directly and honestly, yet in a creative and artistic way. You may not agree with everything that he says, but I promise you that it will challenge you and make you decide where you stand on issues. I like to say that Ross' music is honesty wrapped in humility. As you listen to his music, just understand that he is saying things with an honest and sincere heart. Ross is my favorite artist and for good reason. Where else do you find a guy who writes you back a personal email and actually answers the specific questions you have? Each project he produces continues to deliver and I have yet to be disappointed. I like it so much that I cannot promote Perhaps I've Said Too Much enough or any of Ross' music, for that matter. Whether you are in the mood to praise the Lord or just examine your Christian walk, you need to support this man's music and ministry. Go purchase this cd and feed both your brain and soul! While you are at it, buy one for a friend and share the blessing!
